Poop 101: What Your Poop Says About You
Let’s face it. Poop isn’t the most glamorous topic. But it’s one of the most honest.
Every bowel movement is your body’s way of telling you how your digestive system is doing. It reflects how well you're breaking down food, how your microbiome is functioning, how inflammation is being managed, and whether your detox pathways are open and flowing.
It might feel a little awkward at first, but learning how to “read” your stool is one of the easiest and most insightful ways to tune into your health.
So let’s break it down.
Your Gut Speaks Daily. Are You Listening?
The gut isn’t just where digestion happens. It’s where immunity is built, nutrients are absorbed, hormones are activated, and neurotransmitters like serotonin are produced. When something is off in your stool, it's often a reflection of deeper imbalances in the gut, brain, and immune system.
That’s why we encourage all our patients to start paying attention. Not in a stressful or obsessive way, but as a natural check-in. Your poop can be a powerful biofeedback tool when you know what to look for.
The Bristol Stool Chart
Originally developed by researchers in the UK, the Bristol Stool Chart categorizes stool into seven types based on shape and consistency. It's widely used in both conventional and functional medicine to help evaluate digestive health.
Here's what each type can mean:
Types 3 and 4 are considered ideal.
Types 1 and 2 suggest constipation and sluggish digestion. Types 5 through 7 suggest rapid transit, inflammation, or gut irritation.

Signs Your Gut Needs Support
Even if you're eating healthy, your poop might still be telling you something is off. Here are some signs to watch for:
You go less than once a day or more than three times daily
Your stool is difficult to pass or always urgent
You see mucus, blood, or undigested food
You feel gassy, bloated, or uncomfortable after meals
You alternate between constipation and diarrhea
Your poop has an extremely foul smell
These are all signs your digestive system may be struggling. You could be dealing with imbalances in the gut lining, microbiome, enzyme levels, or motility.
How to Improve Your Stool Naturally
If you’re not consistently in the Type 3 to 4 range, here are a few foundational ways to support healthier bowel movements.
Hydrate Like You Mean It
Water softens stool and supports natural bowel movements. Aim to drink half your body weight in ounces of water each day.
Eat More Plants
Fiber from vegetables, fruits, chia seeds, and flaxseed feeds your beneficial gut bacteria and helps regulate how quickly food moves through the digestive tract.
Mind Your Stress
Stress slows digestion. Try deep breathing, get outside, or explore calming movement like yoga or walking.
Get Moving
Sedentary lifestyles often lead to sluggish digestion. Even 20 to 30 minutes of light movement per day can help.
Consider Your Microbiome
An imbalance in gut bacteria, called dysbiosis, can trigger irregularity. Probiotics may help, but it’s important to use the right strains based on your individual needs.
How Our Advanced Stool Test Reveals What Others Miss
If you’ve already made healthy changes and still experience symptoms like bloating, constipation, urgency, or irregularity, it may be time to dig deeper—literally.
Most stool tests on the market are limited. They often rely on outdated methods like culture, microscopy, or basic PCR panels that provide a simple positive or negative result. These older methods miss low-level infections, can’t detect many microbial species, and offer limited insight into what’s really driving your symptoms.
We use the GI-MAP, a quantitative PCR (qPCR) DNA-based stool test that sets a new standard for gut diagnostics.
Here’s how it’s different:
-
Truly quantitative: This isn’t a yes-or-no result. The GI-MAP measures the exact amount of each organism present, so we can distinguish a minor imbalance from an active infection.
-
More sensitive and accurate: qPCR technology can detect microbes that traditional tests miss—down to the strain level.
-
Clinically actionable insights: Every organism on the panel has been individually validated and selected based on its relevance to real clinical outcomes.
-
Faster turnaround: Unlike sequencing methods that require weeks to process, GI-MAP delivers results in just a few days.
-
Covers everything that matters: From bacteria, viruses, parasites, and fungi to markers for digestion, inflammation, immune activity, and leaky gut.
This test is based on the same molecular technology used in cutting-edge research and hospital diagnostics. It’s the most advanced, reliable way to evaluate your gut health and get to the root of stubborn symptoms.
If you’ve ever been told your gut tests were “normal,” but you still don’t feel well—this is the test you’ve been waiting for.
What We Test For
Our Comprehensive Stool Test doesn’t just skim the surface. It’s a deep and detailed look into the state of your entire gut ecosystem. Using advanced quantitative PCR (qPCR) DNA technology, this test gives us precise insights into what’s growing in your microbiome—and what shouldn’t be.
We assess a full spectrum of microbes, including both beneficial and harmful bacteria, to understand your microbial balance. This includes important keystone strains like Faecalibacterium prausnitzii, which are essential for gut barrier health and inflammation control. We also evaluate for pathogenic bacteria that can trigger symptoms or chronic immune activation, such as Clostridium difficile, Salmonella, Campylobacter, EHEC, and others.
The test detects parasites, protozoa, candida and other fungal overgrowths, as well as viruses that can linger in the gut. We also check for H. pylori, a common but often missed bacterial infection that can lead to ulcers, reflux, and even nutrient malabsorption.
In addition, the panel screens for common culprits in small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO), such as elevated levels of Streptococcus and Enterococcus, as well as organisms like Staph aureus, which don’t belong in high numbers in a healthy gut.
But it goes beyond just identifying pathogens. This test evaluates markers of digestive and immune function, such as elastase (pancreatic enzyme output), secretory IgA (mucosal immunity), and anti-gliadin IgA (gluten sensitivity). It also measures zonulin, a key marker for intestinal permeability or “leaky gut,” giving us insight into how intact your gut lining really is.
This kind of comprehensive view allows us to connect the dots between your symptoms and what’s actually happening inside your gut—and most importantly, it allows us to create a personalized and effective plan for healing.
