Understanding 21st Century Chiropractic Care

Modern chiropractic care supports the natural healing processes in the body, helping you overcome chronic pain and avoid a lifestyle of recurring health problems. Misalignment in the spine can have a domino effect on many other aspects of health and wellness.

Our digital lifestyle is an epidemic, with many people experiencing chronic issues due to repetitive forces, injury, and poor posture – leading to misalignment and malformation. “Digital dementia” happens due to poor posture, sedentary lifestyles, and over-using technology. Doctors are seeing many cases of “text-neck syndrome” and “sitting diseases,” which are foundational factors that contribute to a variety of ongoing health issues.

Here’s how our services address the needs:

Your overall health depends on the structure of your body, including a highly functioning nervous system and alignment in the spinal column. Dr. Todd uses the 5 Pillars of vertebral subluxation complex to provide each patient with a personalized experience. These pillars provide a clear path to support your spine’s health through accurate diagnosis, adjustments, and lifestyle modifications.

Each patient is unique, which why there isn’t a cookie-cutter treatment approach for every person. Dr. Todd takes the time to understand your goals and lifestyle factors to ensure the treatments support current needs and long-term results. Our focus is on helping you feel the best, which includes a personalized treatment plan for correcting structural derangements and integrating Lifestyle Medicine.

Ultimately, the goal is to improve your comfort, strength, and function throughout the day. Our approach is to help with a whole-body approach, including therapeutic exercises that can be implemented at home. In-office chiropractic adjustments, personalized therapeutic stretches, condition-specific spinal traction, combined with home fitness and lifestyle modifications, can have a dramatic impact on improving how you feel and move each day.

better.

The Posture Health Connection

While chiropractic care focuses on the diagnosis and treatment of disorders related to the neuromuscularskeletal system, it can have a far-reaching effect on all parts of the body. Manipulation of the spine and manual adjustments help to improve overall balance and flow.

The goal is to improve functionality and reduce pain, helping patients optimize all aspects of their health. These services go far beyond spinal adjustments. We’ve found that in-office chiropractic treatments offer the best results when patients also learn about Lifestyle Medicine.

The delicate relationship between the spine and the nervous system is key to health and wellness. Our approach is focused on the following beliefs:

  1. The nervous system is affected by both biomechanical and structural derangement of the spine
  2. Chiropractic adjustments help by restoring the spinal structural integrity and reduces the pressure placed on the neurological tissue. By supporting the care of the nervous system and spine, the result is an overall improvement in individual health.

These chiropractic adjustments help to alleviate irritation affecting the spinal nerve, which can re-establish mobility within the bones, joints, and muscles. Additionally, Dr. Todd is an extremity specialist, which means he works with more than the spine: jaw (TMJ), shoulder, elbow, hand, hips, knee, and ankle ailments. These extremity adjustments can enhance and stabilize spinal adjustments for optimal results.

5 Components of Vertebral Subluxation (Misalignment)

Why is chiropractic care so valuable? This specialized approach is a critical part of alternative health care because of the widespread effects on the body. Maintaining structural alignment supports natural healing processes, helping people recover from disease, and optimize lifelong health. These adjustments offer the critical piece needed to bridge Lifestyle Medicine factors with the vibrant results you want to experience in the body.

Subluxation is a chiropractic term referring to the misalignment or abnormal separation of the spinal joints or vertebrae. This occurrence frequently happens in the spine and can be seen in abnormal posture (and inculcation of groups of spinal subluxations). When misalignment occurs, it has an impact on the nerve communication that happens between the body and the brain. This separation or misalignment can affect people of all ages, often caused by sleeping position, trauma, stress, or toxic load in the body.

When symptoms are present, it means there has already been tissue damage and abnormal function. Don’t wait for the signs before determining the health of your body! Instead of relying on symptoms to determine a person’s health, the chiropractic approach brings the vertebrae and supporting muscles back into balance, helping to restore the body and prevent degeneration that can lead to symptoms in the future.

Chiropractic care focuses on supporting all 5 components of vertebral misalignment to not only improve function but also optimize all tissues and bones:

A healthy spine structure allows the bones to move while also protecting the sensitive nerve roots and spinal column. When stress affects one or more of the vertebrae, they can become “fixated” or “stuck” – often resulting in a domino effect of hypermobility in other joints to compensate for the injured vertebra.

When this happens, motion becomes limited in the spine. For example, people find it hard to bend or turn because the essential spinal curves are compromised.

Dr. Todd identifies this aspect of the Vertebral Subluxation Complex through multiple evaluations, including an assessment of your posture and gait, analyzing x-ray images, and other orthopedic tests to see the function of the body.

When you are experiencing a pinched nerve or irritation in the nerves, then it’s often an indication that the bones in the spine aren’t moving properly. This pinch causes irritation in the delicate nerve tissue, leading to a variety of symptoms.

The truth is that it’s quite rare for a person to have a pinched nerve. Some chiropractic experts suggest that direct bone pressure on nerve tissue only accounts for approximately 10% - 15% of all spinal-related problems.

Most often, the improper functioning of nearby spinal structures causes nerve irritation. Even if the bone isn’t placing direct pressure on the nerve, it’s common for the nerve tissue to be inflamed, twisted, or stretched.

When this happens, it affects nerve communication between the brain and body. As a result, the natural healing functions in the body are hindered, and nerve irritation can also contribute to a higher risk of disease and health concerns.

When a subluxation occurs, it’s essential to look at how the bones and muscles are working together. Bones are static structures – muscle movement acts on the bones to move them.

When nerve impulses are constrained by the subluxation complex, then it can cause the muscles to weaken and atrophy. On the other hand, overstimulation of the nerve impulses results in muscle spasms and tightness.

Both constrained and over-stimulated nerves can cause a change in muscle elasticity. As a result, multiple chiropractic adjustments are necessary to cause long-lasting changes in the spine. The ideal treatment period also depends on the age of the injury. Recent spinal problems can often be rehabilitated more quickly compared to chronic spinal issues.

Vertebral subluxation also affects connective tissues, including the ligaments and discs. Even though the term “slipped disc” is often used, technically, it isn’t possible for an intervertebral disc to “slip.” But injury can happen when a disc bulges, tears, herniates, or degenerates.

Local injury in the spine often involves ligaments and other connective tissues as well. For example, when the skin feels hot and tender to the touch, it results from an accumulation of lymph and blood, causing swelling and edema in the area.

Healing soft tissue can take longer compared to other rehabilitation efforts. The ligaments and discs have a low blood supply, which is why it takes the body longer to repair these parts of the body.

The fifth component of misalignment is related to the way the body stabilizes a joint after injury. When trauma or malfunction occurs, one of the natural responses is deposit calcium in the joint – similar to what happens when a broken bone is mended.

The calcium buildup is slow, but it accumulates over time – resulting in abnormal growths and spurs in the bone. If you’ve heard someone talk about arthritis in a joint that was injured many years ago, then it is likely caused by the calcium buildup. Eventually, adjacent bones are “splinted,” which hinders the function of a joint that was once mobile.

This calcium stabilization happens in phases:

  • Phase 1: Reduced range of motion and the loss of the spinal curve.
  • Phase 2: Bone spurs start to form, and disc narrowing and lipping occurs.
  • Phase 3: Eventually, the bone fuses and causes complete joint immobilization.

Chiropractic care can help to slow – or even stop – the degenerative process. For best results, treatment needs to begin in the earlier phases. Regular treatment can help to improve flexibility and strength, which minimizes the buildup of calcium in the joints.

Why to see Dr. Todd

Dr. Todd W. Bunning, DC, PC wants to help his patients feel the best, which is why he is proactive about ongoing training and education. He offers a hands-on, personalized approach for every patient – starting with a thorough examination and diagnosis. A customized treatment plan is then designed for each person, encompassing structural treatments, rehabilitation, therapeutic exercises, and Lifestyle Medicine counseling.

Through this holistic and functional process, Dr. Todd helps by restoring the mobility in the joint. When the area is damaged by repetitive stresses or trauma, it results in pain that can disrupt all aspects of life. Medication only addresses the pain symptoms, while a chiropractic approach gets to the root issues, helping tissues to heal, so the tightness and pain naturally fade away.

Chiropractic care can be a standalone treatment, but it is often most effective when used in conjunction with other treatments – including nutritional therapy and functional medicine. Dr. Todd offers a full-service approach in his office, giving patients access to all the resources, treatments, and information needed to live a healthy, thriving lifestyle.

Not only is Dr. Todd a practicing chiropractor in Roseville, but he’s actively pursuing multiple postgraduate diplomate and fellowships in chiropractic clinical neurology, integrative & functional medicine, clinical nutrition, and advanced autoimmune and endocrine subspecialties.

Reduce need for medications

Chiropractic care is a drug-free, mainly hands-on way to normalize a person's posture and spinal alignment. The American College of Physicians guidelines recommend chiropractic as a first option for acute or low back pain.

Chiropractic Benefits During & After Pregnancy

The added weight of carrying a baby all day takes an undeniable toll on the spine. Gentle spinal manipulations during pregnancy can reduce back pain by alleviating the pressure that contributes to the pain response in the back and extremities. Chiropractic care is a preferred method for pain relief, especially since women don’t want to take medications that could affect their babies.

Regular chiropractic services during pregnancy can support the body while it’s changing to accommodate the growing baby. Muscles loosen up as the body prepares for birth, which can place uncomfortable pressure on the lower back.

Additionally, the center of gravity shifts, and increased body weight strains the ligaments and muscles. Chiropractic adjustments help to maintain alignment, so the muscles can do their job in supporting the belly and lower back.

Pregnant women also find immune benefits from chiropractic care. Supporting optimal immune function is an essential step to protecting both the baby and mother.

After birth, new mothers face a host of physical challenges, which is why it’s critical to re-establish a healthy posture. Chiropractic adjustments can help with pelvic pain, promote faster healing, minimize postpartum depression, and restore the body's normal biomechanics.

Personalized Chiropractic Treatment for Children

People of all ages can benefit from chiropractic care – including children. Since children have active, physical lifestyles, it’s common for them to experience injuries and falls regularly. Whether the child falls on the playground or is injured while participating in sports, these injuries can lead to soreness, discomfort, pain, and stiffness.

Children respond well to chiropractic care because these adjustments work in alignment with the natural healing functions within the body. The manipulations are very gentle and always adapted to the needs of each patient. As a highly-skilled chiropractor, Dr. Todd can help children maintain optimal health in the early stages of life, helping to reduce the long-term chronic issues that can develop in adulthood.

Chiropractic care in childhood supports positive growth and optimal development. At the same time, children often benefit from the immune-boosting benefits of chiropractic adjustments, which positively impact overall health and wellness. Dr. Todd combines chiropractic treatments with a personalized Lifestyle Medicine approach to support each child's unique needs.

Chiropractic Care and Athletic Performance

When your body is in alignment, it’s no surprise that you can perform better on the sports field. Athletes of all ages can benefit from chiropractic adjustments to find relief from many different musculoskeletal issues. These treatments are helpful for athletes both before and after they participate in their events.

Chiropractic care for athletes can fall into two categories:

  1. Injury and Recovery: Whether the muscles are overworked or an acute injury happens, chiropractic care can promote proper alignment. This approach speeds up the healing time and restores function more quickly, helping you get back on the field with minimal delay. Chiropractic services are often a non-invasive option for athletes who want to avoid surgery and medication use.
  2. Improve Performance: Regular chiropractic adjustments can improve physical performance. Every training session puts a strain on the body and joints. Chiropractic care helps by addressing alignment issues that might be inhibiting athletic performance. The goal is to promote an optimal range of motion and prevent injuries before they occur.

Not only do professional athletes benefit from chiropractic services, but these adjustments are also helpful for student-athletes, novices, and weekend warriors. It doesn’t matter if you are training multiple times a week or joining a pickup game here and there – talk to our team to learn how to prevent injury and optimize performance.
