Everywhere you turn, there are news headlines and conversations about the dangers of the pandemic. COVID-19 has changed our reality – having a far-reaching effect on every aspect of our lives. But is the virus the real pandemic? When we look at the bigger picture, it’s easy to see that many people are missing the health opportunities that are right in front of their eyes.

As we learn more through this pandemic, it’s becoming clear that some people experience mild symptoms, while others have severe consequences from the disease. The risk of COVID-19 complications is higher for people with pre-existing health conditions, such as COPD, diabetes, heart disease, hypertension, and other chronic lung conditions. The truth is that many of these health issues are caused by chronic inflammation and excess body fat.

Addressing Symptoms Instead of the Root

The problem is that many healthcare providers are only focused on symptom management, with minimal effort placed on addressing the underlying health issues that lead to severe complications. If we want to reduce the severity of this current health crisis, then we need to turn our attention to HEALTHcare instead of DISEASEcare.

Ultimately, it comes down to a proactive vs. reactive response. Many medical providers and patients are only addressing health concerns when the symptoms of the disease set in. At that point, it is sometimes too late to reverse the chronic health issues that have an undeniable impact on the severity of    COVID-19.

Imagine how the narrative would change if we shifted from disease management to promoting true health. By focusing on immune-boosting habits, eliminating excess body fat, and reducing inflammation, the body is more prepared to handle any disease or pathogen with which it may come in contact.

Obesity Pandemic in the United States

With over 40% of adults in the United States falling in the category of “obese,” it’s time to look at how obesity is playing a role in the severity of COVID-19. Here are a few interesting statistics showing how much obesity increases the risk of severe health consequences from COVID-19:

  • A BMI of 30 or more increases a person’s risk by 27% of developing a severe case of COVID-19
  • A BMI of 40 or more doubles a person’s risk of severe issues from COVID-19
  • Obesity is the top risk factor for developing a severe case of COVID-19 in people over the age of 55
  • People who are obese seem to benefit less from vaccinations (compared to people at a healthy weight)

The challenges of obesity most likely play a role in the severity of COVID-19 because of the chronic cycles of inflammation happening in the body. Systematic inflammation contributes to a variety of health concerns that affect the liver, brain, adipose (fat) cells, pancreas, and more.

Obesity and inflammation go hand-in-hand, which is why a holistic approach to healthcare focuses on both weight management and inflammation reduction. For most people, reducing excess weight can result in less inflammation – which can have a positive impact on reducing the severeity of COVID-19 when exposed to the virus.

Even though obesity is common in our country, it isn’t normal or healthy for people to live with the extra weight. Treating obesity through a holistic approach can be an integral part of improving overall health, helping the body respond better to disease and infections.
